Barman tried over deathly drinking game

tequilaA barman from Berlin has gone on trial accused with serving an underage boy so much tequila that it killed him. The boy who was 16 at the time of his death had drank an estimated 45 shots.

The incident took place in January 2007 and the barman has been officially charged with ‘fatally injuring’ the boy.

It is alleged that the barman challenged the boy to a drinking competition but then poured himself mostly water. The amount of alcohol consumed by the boy meant that he fell into an alcohol induced coma and died 4 weeks later.

The case has triggered mass debate in Germany over the amount of drinking done by those who are underage.

The barman is also accused of serving alcohol to those underage on a total of over 70 occasions in the 2 years up to 2007.
